History of Kubota Tractors

Kubota Tractors - Early Beginnings

Gonshiro Kubota seeded Kubota Corporation in 1890 in Osaka, Japan, during the Industrial Revolution. Interestingly, the first Kubota products were cast-iron pipes for water lines to sanitize the tap water. The pipe production turned out productive and allowed Kubota to develop further. 

In 1922, Kubota created its first kerosene-fuelled engine for agriculture and industrial purposes. They were a pioneer company at that time and constantly upgraded their products. They focused on creating energy-efficient, cost-effective, and durable products and stuck to their mission to this day.

Somewhere around 1945, Kubota expanded the agricultural and construction machinery. That’s when they started focusing on creating tractors, excavators, incinerators, and combine harvesters came into the picture. 

The First Kubota tractor launched

The Expansion Overseas

The 70s were а significant milestone for Kubota. Towards the end of the '60s, the American Company Ford proposed interest in getting an OEM supply of small tractors from Kubota, which opened the gates for expansion overseas.

The US market asked for petrol engines only, but Kubota insisted on diesel engines. They created a multi-cylinder compact engine that passed the problems with diesel engines. However, Kubota decided to limit the export of diesel engine tractors.

After some time, the diesel tractors became highly rated. The performance and efficiency they offered allowed Kubota to establish their name in the American Market. By 1972, Kubota sold more than 2,000 tractors. 

As the demand rate increased exponentially, Kubota officially expanded in Compton City, California and opened the Kubota Tractor Corporation (KTC) as a sales base. Marubeni Corporation was their export partner. 

Kubota expands machinery production

The mid-70s were a difficult economic period for Japan. Kubota experienced a significant setback in terms of growth that required an effective plan to put the business back on track. 

The first thing they did was expand the company in Europe. They allied with Marubeni Corporation in France in 1974 and became a base company for tractor exports in Europe. 

Pressured to overcome their challenge, Kubota decided to focus on creating compact vehicles. Somewhere around 1974, they launched the KH1 fully-rotating mini back-hoe. This became the base machine for the company and revamped Kubota’s organization, sales system, and production.

Additionally, the KH1 grew in demand and allowed Kubota to rise high on the market and increase sales. By the end of the 70s, Kubota improved the technology of the products. Later, they expanded further in Europe, specifically in West Germany, Switzerland, and the Netherlands. 

In 1979, Kubota established “U.K. Kubota Tractor Sales Co., Ltd.” and “Kubota Germany Limited Company” in 1983. Becoming this obvious allowed the company to expand in Australia and Canada as well.

Expanding the Kubota model lines

After establishing their business on the market, Kubota had enough funds to expand the machinery models. Here’s the Kubota model history in chronological order:

  • 1993 – Kubota features the first diesel engine approved by California’s exhaust emission standards. They convinced the board with the cleaner-burning engine.
  • 2000 – Kubota introduced the first subcompact tractor in the BX series and became a leader in the market.
  • 2002 – Kubota expands the subcompact category and adds the tractor-loader-backhoe model to the line. BX23 was the first subcompact tractor with an LA211 front loader and BT600 backhoe.
  • 2004 – Kubota introduced the first utility vehicle to the US and Canadian markets. They started selling 5,000 units, but soon enough they tripled the sales.
  • 2006 – Kubota opened the Industrial Equipment Corporation in Jefferson, Georgia, and produced 70,000 tractor parts annually. 
  • 2018 – Kubota introduced the Sidekick, or their largest RTV to date. 

Kubota Today

Nowadays, Kubota has over 50,000 employees who contribute to pursuing their mission of manufacturing sustainable tractors. Concluding by 2023, the company counts $20.4 billion in revenue and is still growing. 

In January 2024, Kubota informed the audience to expect a new holistic approach to innovation and technology integration in 2030. By this time, the only thing left for us would be to wait and see the outcome.
