Drivetrain modes: 2WD and 4WD

The switch located on the upper console easily switches between drivetrain modes. Generally, the 2WD mode is engaged when the switch is pushed downwards, while the 4WD mode is engaged when the switch is in the middle position.

The 2WD and 4WD switching process can be done on the fly.

Driving modes: Eco, normal, work, and sport driving mode

The selected operation mode is displayed on the eco, normal, work, and sport driving modes. The available Can-Am Defender driving modes settings will depend on the vehicle model. Typically, the Can Am equipment comes with at least a work and normal mode.

While the normal and work modes are self-explanatory, you might be wondering about the eco mode. So, what is eco mode on Can-Am Defender? Contrary to popular opinion, the eco mode doesn’t limit power. Instead, it will require more throttle travel to reach it as the vehicle is focused on saving fuel.

The process of changing modes on the Can-Am Defender is pretty straightforward. On the right side of the steering wheel, there is a “Mode” button.

So, to change between the different modes, press the button until you see the desired drive mode on the dashboard. For instance, if you want to know how to put the Can-Am Defender in sports mode, press the mode button until sport mode is written at the bottom of the dashboard.

Gear ranges: Low vs high range

The Can-Am Defender series models typically have low and high ranges. The high range should be used when driving the Defender above 20 MPH, and the low range is best for riding below 20 MPH.

Besides the speed, it is crucial to adjust the driving range according to the work you are doing and the terrain. For instance, the low range should be used for crossing obstacles, uphill driving, carrying heavy loads, hauling a trailer, pushing equipment or navigating mud holes.

To shift between the high and low range, you should use the shift lever located on the right upper side of the steering wheel. The shift lever has five positions: park, reverse, neutral, high, and low range. You must stop the Defender and press the brake to change between them.
