How Often Should I Change the Oil in My Can Am Defender?

Even though the maintenance intervals may vary depending on how often you use your vehicle and for what purpose, there are well-known Can-Am maintenance schedules that should be followed to ensure the best off-road performance. The general rule when changing oil on a Can-Am Defender is to do so on a yearly maintenance interval date

However, you should also be mindful of how much you’re using your vehicle. Recommended maintenance intervals range from 200 hours for normal use to 100 hours for severe use. When transcribed into mileage, this comes down to 2,000 maintenance interval miles for normal use and 1,000 miles for severe use.

If you’re looking into the different types of oil you should change in the Can-Am Defender, here’s a quick explanation you can follow:

Break-in time

The Can-Am Defender requires a break-in oil change within the first month of usage to ensure proper operation. If you don’t feel confident changing the oil yourself for the first time, remember that you can always contact your local Can Am Defender dealer for help.

Changing engine oil

After the primary break-in oil change, you should change the engine oil every year of normal use or 6 months of severe use. This means that every 200 or 100 hours, you’re supposed to change the engine oil alongside its filter to ensure proper functions.

Changing the front differential oil

The front differential oil is changed every year or every 2,000 miles. However, you should first replace it at 1,000 miles before you start following the regular schedule.

During this maintenance, we recommend you inspect the front differential oil level and look for contamination. To check the overall condition, pay attention to the vents, mounts, bolt torque, and seals.

Changing rear gearcase or transmission oil

The rear gearcase or transmission oil is changed every 100 hours of normal use and every 50 hours of severe use. This gives you approximately 1,000 miles of normal and 500 miles of severe use before replacing the gearbox oil. However, we emphasize regularly inspecting the gearbox oil level, checking for contamination, and refilling it when needed.

How to Check the Oil on a Can-Am Defender

Now that we’ve elaborated on how often you should change the oil on your Can-Am Defender, we also want to explain how to check its levels. Doing so will help you notice any potential leaks beforehand and ensure the vehicle has enough oil to run. Here’s a step-by-step guide you can follow to check the engine oil level:

  1. Turn on the vehicle and let it idle for 60 seconds to warm up.
  2. Check if the oil filter area and drain plug have any leaks under the vehicle.
  3. Turn off the engine.
  4. Unscrew and pull out the dipstick.
  5. Wipe the dipstick clean and insert it back while ensuring it’s screwed tightly.
  6. Remove the dipstick again to check the oil level - the oil level should be between the MIN and MAX indicators.
