Who Makes Polaris Engines?
Polaris engines are renowned for two things: their reliability and performance. They are used to power different types of vehicles, including ATVs and UTVs. But, who makes Polaris engines?
We decided to solve this mystery once and for all. We dug a bit deeper into the history of Polaris vehicles and will reveal the answer to the question of how does Polaris make its own engines.
Polaris Engines Short History
Polaris is an American manufacturer of various vehicle types, including off-road, on-road, snow, marine, commercial, and those for government use. All of them include robust and high-performing engines. As a Polaris equipment dealership, we have some first-hand insight into the question of what engines do Polaris use, with a special focus on ATVs and UTVs.
When Polaris opened the manufacturing line, the engines for its all-terrain vehicles and snowmobiles were developed by a subsidiary of Subaru Corporation called Robin. But that was only at the beginning of their work. So, who makes Polaris engines now?
Three decades later, in 1995, Polaris started manufacturing its own engines. Production kicked off with the Polaris Magnum 425 4-stroke ATV and twin 700 snowmobile engines. The first engine plant was built in Wisconsin.
Since then, Polaris has designed and manufactured its engines in-house. What’s really interesting, is that it still maintains its Subaru partnership to this day.
Where Are Polaris Engines Made?
Polaris has factories in various locations both inside and outside of the U.S. Within the U.S., they have factories in Minnesota, South Dakota, Ohio, Alabama, Wisconsin, and Iowa. Outside of the U.S., Polaris has a factory in Monterrey, Mexico.
However, all facilities have unique duties. So, who makes Polaris side by side engines, as well as engines for other Polaris vehicle types?
Polaris engines are manufactured and assembled in two locations: Monterrey, Mexico, and Osceola, Wisconsin.

ProStar Engines for Off-Road Vehicles
When customers come to our Wickham Tractor shops, they tend to ask what engines do Polaris use. Besides informing our customers that Polaris uses the highest quality engines, we always explain that most of their off-road vehicles have a ProStar engine.
ProStar is known for its reliability, durability, and high performance. If well maintained, ProStar engines might last up to 20,000 miles.
There are different ProStar engines, and they can be divided into two categories: UTV engines and snowmobile engines. The UTV Polaris Prostar engines are designed to make tough tasks easy and come with different levels of power ranging from 44HP to 110HP, depending on the model.
You should know by now who makes Polaris Ranger engines, but what type of engine does it use? The exact engine type will depend on the model, but most often, Polaris Rangers have a ProStar 4-Stroke Twin Cylinder DOHC engine with cylinder displacements ranging from 500cc to 1500cc.
Conclusion
The engine is the heart of the vehicle. So, if you are interested in purchasing a UTV or an ATV, you might be wondering who makes Polaris Engines. The brand manufactures and assembles its engines in-house, specifically in their Wisconsin and Mexico factories. They are made according to the highest industry standards to ensure reliability and unparalleled performance.
